New Diaspora started out as a digital storytelling platform, focusing on the new generation of Greeks living abroad during the crisis in their homeland. Since then, New Diaspora has been gradually evolving into a participatory media channel that records a migration wave as it happens. Its goal is to engage, connect and inspire democratic dialogue and cross-fertilisation of ideas, eventually crystallising the collective pulse of a “borderless nation”.
In June 2014, New Diaspora became a registered Foundation (Stichting) under Dutch law.
Founder and Creative Director of New Diaspora. Film lover, maker and teacher. Learned how to ride a bike after he reached 40. Spent way too many hours blogging and communicating with total strangers. Never regretted it. Doesn’t believe in boxes and people who think anywhere near them.
Moved out of Greece ages ago with a hope to become a successful lab rat and ended up in Amsterdam working with cows. A scientific refugee that loves photography, piano banging and catching airplanes to random destinations.
She has crossed most oceans as a member of the crew onboard a cruise ship, a cargo ship and a tanker. Left that profession to become a citizen of the world, starting in the Netherlands. Will never stop loving her island, Corfu, and the most beautiful country of the world, Greece.
The New Diaspora Team
Lives in New Media and works as a journalist in Athens. He doesn’t have time to think about weekends, because he is too busy working. Ask him to write a few hundred words for anything you like, and he’ll probably find a way to do it.
Digital Marketing Consultant
Having tried for years to become a true ‘Thessalonikian’, he was forced to abandon the city he loved at the age of 47. Some small adventures later, Tom ended up being an unemployed Baron, next to the birthplace of Queen Amalia. As for tomorrow, no one knows where it will find him.
Studied various things such as languages, translation, communication, management, culture, and in every job she does she just puts them in the blender in different dosages. Since 2009, she splits her time between Greece and the Netherlands, and as a result she feels as a part-time immigrant in both of them.
Marketing and Fundraising
A communications and development Lancelot. He has worked in numerous, seemingly impossible, international projects. And he somehow still does… An aficionado of creative thinking, which he puts down in writing, whenever the stars align. He loves Sci-Fi reading and cinema.
Working with languages is her job and her passion. She is an official translator in Greek, English and Dutch. She translated literature, works for the television and served as an interpreter next to late film director Theo Angelopoulos. Never has she felt a stranger in the Netherlands and she loathes labeling.
She stays mostly in her bed, working her way through translations in her laptop, and dreaming to become a fisherwoman in the Carribean. When standing, she bakes cupcakes. She is a faithful book lover but rather unfaithful to her hair, since she changes colours and haircuts as often as most people change underwear.
Christina specialises in customer services transformation, strategy and governance, as well as performance and change management. She is addicted to anything relating to Greece’s financial recovery, fresh ideas, innovation, the power of networking, leadership and social entrepreneurship.
While others are leaving Greece, Matina -after several “nomadic” years- has recently returned to Athens and is discovering the adventure of being a cultural entrepreneur in Greece during the time of crisis. Many ask her “until when?”. Time will tell. She insists to dream with her eyes wide- open.
Junior Content Manager
Having studied history and journalism and with a Master’s degree in publishing, Amalia’s main goal is to exercise her writing skills constantly. She has mainly worked as a journalist embracing the popular quote, which states that ‘journalism is literature in a hurry’. She spends half of her time in Thessaloniki and the other half in Athens.
